Empowering social and solidarity economy and civil society organizations to achieve
their full potential as catalysts of local socio-economic development.
About Edward Potter
For Ed, solidarity economy organizations, civil society, and socio-economic development have been key passions throughout a 30+ year professional career. He launched Worldwise Civil Society to unite those passions to empower these organizations in emerging economies to achieve their full potential as catalysts in locally-led socioeconomic development.
With over 15 years working in the cooperative and mutual insurance industry in North, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean, he has extensive experience and expertise advocating with national and international insurance authorities, educating cooperatives on insurance sector opportunities and issues, and microinsurance and inclusive insurance development. Most recently, he supported the National Organization of Brazilian Cooperatives in shaping cooperative and mutual insurance legislation, allowing cooperatives to participate fully in the insurance marketplace for the first time.

Ed has over 20 years of executive leadership experience with international civil society organizations (including trade, professional, philanthropic associations, and foundations) and solidarity enterprise organizations (including cooperative and mutual enterprises). His nonprofit association knowledge and expertise includes executive leadership, governance, organizational strategy, operations, business development, member and stakeholder engagement, advocacy, and marketing and communication.

As an international development practitioner, he has conceptualized and led projects abroad with private voluntary organizations, global foundations, and associations worldwide. He has collaborated with funders, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), private and public foundations, public charities, and corporations. He has managed project portfolios as large as $7 million focused on cooperative development, cooperative legal and regulatory reform, microinsurance, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, cooperative insurance legal and regulatory reform, citizen participation, and youth development.
A graduate of the University of Michigan and a former Certified Association Executive, he is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.
